(Oct. 11, 2008) – Hot Rod Fuller raced his David Powers-owned Carter Machinery/JLG-sponsored Caterpillar dragster to the No. 7 qualifying position Saturday afternoon at Virginia Motorsports Park. Fuller and the Carter Machinery/JLG team entered the final day of qualifying at the Richmond NHRA race in the No. 8 qualifying position at 3.853-seconds. The seven-time Top Fuel winner used a tune-up from crew chief Rob Flynn to power the Caterpillar-backed rail to a lap of 3.823 seconds at 315.56 mph. That moved the Carter/JLG dragster to sixth in the 16-car order. It was Fuller’s quickest and fastest 1,000-foot pass and the fastest run of Saturday’s opening qualifying session. On his final qualifying attempt of the weekend, Fuller’s rail shook the tires and slowed to a lap of 8.460 at 69.52. He finished in the No. 7 qualifying position. It is the first time Fuller has qualified in the top half of the field since qualifying second at the Reading race in August. “I’m pretty excited about the way the CAT car is running this weekend,” Fuller said. “Our goal was to come out and have fun and we’re doing that. We made three really good runs and made our quickest and fastest run since going to 1,000-feet. I think we can go some rounds tomorrow.” Fuller and the Caterpillar car will face off against No. 10 qualifier David Grubnic in the opening round of Top Fuel eliminations at 11 a.m. (ET) on Sunday morning at Virginia Motorsports Park. Fuller is 2-1 against the Australian native this season.
